Ground ball pickups

This drill is clean two-handed pickups off the deck at pace, the loose-ball picture.

What good looks like

  • Hips drop to the ball
  • Two hands on the pickup
  • Ball secure before the eyes come up

The drill

  1. Place the ball on the ground 5 meters ahead of you.
  2. Jog toward it, drop your hips as you arrive, and scoop it with two hands, one hand behind the ball and one on top.
  3. Carry on for three strides with the ball in two hands, then place it down for the return rep.
  4. Approach from both sides equally so both lead hands get work.

Space

15m flat corridor, one ball, one cone to mark the start.

Make it harder / make it easier

Harder. Roll the ball ahead of yourself so the pickup is on a moving ball.

Easier. Walk the approach and pause over the ball before the scoop.
