How to drop punt

This drill grooves the drop. Almost every bad kick is a bad drop, not a bad swing.

What good looks like

  • Ball points down at the foot
  • The ball is dropped, not tossed
  • Strike with the hard top of the foot

The drill

  1. Stand still, ball held in two hands out in front of you at waist height.
  2. Point the bottom end of the ball down at your kicking foot.
  3. Let the ball go. Do not toss it up. Your hands stay where they were.
  4. Step onto your standing foot and swing through the ball.
  5. Walk out, collect it, and reset at the same spot.

Space

30m of open grass in one direction, one ball.

Make it harder / make it easier

Harder. Add a single step before the drop, keeping the drop height the same.

Easier. Drop the ball onto the foot with no kick at all, ten times, and just watch where it lands.

How to film it
